Trichloromethane is an organic compound with the chemical formula CHCl3. It is a colorless and transparent liquid with a special odor, sweet taste, high refractive index, non-flammable, heavy and volatile. Sensitive to light, it will react with oxygen in the air when exposed to light, and gradually decompose to generate highly toxic phosgene (carbonyl chloride) and hydrogen chloride. 0.6 percent to 1 percent ethanol can be added as stabilizer.
